When she was just a head her expression took on the look of a gargoyle, it changed her to the core so when she gets a body, she is permanently, deeply wounded by the whole losing the body events, From then on, when she grimaces, frowns, etc. her grimace turns scary, devil looking. Her frown and sad faces look much stronger than they should be and people jump back. Even she is surprised by it "My face has changed."
Night monsters are in silhouette, far away until Lily runs from messengers.
The Enchanted Wilderness is a living organism itself. It stays together and can move from one area to another as a whole. Sometimes the Enchanted Wilderness will recede from a land region. This happened seventy years ago leaving a strip of land near the ocean remarkably traversable until ordinary forest grew in its place. People even drove their cars on the land.
The woman who discovers the Enchanted Wilderness is no longer there, is one of the people who dare to go near the Wilderness so she can collect special berries. She can't find her berries and dares to get closer to the Wilderness than she ever has before. She finds a sight she has never seen before, bare landscape.
When people did, they discovered an ancient city that had been covered and unreachable for thousands of years. People could never have built such a beautiful, advanced city.
When ordinary forest began to take over the land the Enchanted Wilderness had covered, the forest couldn’t grow in the ancient city. Humans can’t build a town or even a single building that could hold back the growth of forest.
So People from many countries moved into the ancient city. They named it Codwell. The humans who live here today don't know how long they will be able to live here. It could be for a few more years, it could be for a thousand years.
Though the city was vacant before people moved in, shells remain, found everywhere in the city, outnumbering the human population, made of an unknown material. They are twice as tall as humans.
Children climb on the shells and put their fingers through the eye holes. Humans believe that the giant suits belonged to the beings who built and lived in this city before.
Groups of them on one side of the city look like they were trying to fight off something. The most obvious guess is that they were trying to stop the Enchanted Wilderness from overtaking them.
When people bang on one, the shell wall sounds thin but the shells cannot be moved from their locations and none of their parts can be moved. Not that they are heavy or welded to their spots. Even the ones that look off-balance cannot be tipped.
Torching and firing bullets at one will leave a mark that washes off with the next rain.
Building a furnace around one and heating it with the hottest rocket engine leaves the stones in nearby buildings hot for weeks but does nothing to one of the shells.
No tool is sharp enough to penetrate under one of the scales.
Once the builders of the city return they could all go back in their shells at once and cause human flesh to fry on human skeletons before a single human could escape, the ultimate surprise attack.
The energy beings fly toward Earth. They can see far ahead, they can read the price on a postage stamp from millions of miles away.
They can see things humans have no way of seeing. With long site they look ahead at their long lost city. They can see into every room.
